The students went from checkpoint to checkpoint and had to complete certain activities. Did I mention there was snow on the ground?
Thank you for sharing your idea! I love the idea of students finding something that matches the paint chip. Using a science journal makes it a little more official and will get them thinking about science terminology when describing! I think it is beneficial for students to get up and go outside not only to play but also to learn! Many teachers keep their students cooped up inside all day simply because they may not know how to extend their classroom to the outdoors. Your WalkKits are a great way to do this!
I am currently a preservice teacher and my professors have shared many ways to get students learning outside of the typical classroom. One of my favorite lessons that I have done with students is called a color match. Each student gets a sample paint strip and their task is to find an object outside that matches the color on their paint strip. This really gets the students out exploring in nature and using their observation skills. I also like that this lesson can be made to fit many different grade levels. For example, upper level students may be expected to fill out a science journal report on the object they found whereas lower level students may be asked to make observations on the object they found. While time and other limitations do not allow me to make every lesson using STEM resources, I definitely notice student engagement skyrocket and participation/discipline becomes a breeze when using projects similar to these that are aligned to my content standards. I want to mention that I also have to deal with the disappointed faces when we must take a break from working on our STEM projects. Students really do enjoy them and when they are aligned to my content standards they really help my tactile learners remember the knowledge and skills they needed to master.

Thanks again for the insight you shared in implementing STEM projects in the elementary classroom.Sabas Chapahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14782571067333199586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4062787008829792602.post-23906794203080247522016-03-02T21:41:58.994-05:002016-03-02T21:41:58.994-05:00Teachers do what they can to make all involved fee...Teachers do what they can to make all involved feel as comfortable with the situation as possible.
